"As indicated to you in Changsha during our annual meeting, money can not change people, only people can. In our society today, many people are striving for money, even at the expense of others. However, there remain some who set their eyes not on immediate gains for themselves, but choose to sacrifice their own good for the good of others. These are the doctors and teachers who have been taking care of their patients and educating the children, deep in the mountains of the rural China, in spite of the most adverse living conditions. They have forgone a more promising career in the city or even time to be spent with their families. They are the living examples. Their caring hearts touch upon others like a candle in the dark, shinning through every corner to light up people's lives. Their virtues as good doctors and good teachers radiate from their deeds and will make positive impact on all of us."
Dr Wang Haitao: a doctor from the village, for the village Dr Wang was born into a peasant family in Tangzhai Village in the township of Xiaowu in Xiaochang County, Hubei Province (湖北孝昌县小悟乡汤砦村) in 1955. Since graduating from the Hubei University of Chinese Medicine (湖北中医学院) in 1977, he has been devoting all his heart and time to the people in the poverty-stricken rural villages.
Despite the difficult conditions in the countryside and his poor livelihood, Dr Wang always strives to improve his medical skills and knowledge and learns from the more experienced doctors with a humble heart. He serves at the countryside clinic whole-heartedly and has repeatedly turned down more promising career options at county-level hospitals. Whatever he does, he has only one aim: to cure his patients from the rural villages.

“As medics we are entrusted with people’s lives. There is no room to relax.” - Dr Wang Haitao
A life saved; a regret for life
In a rainy evening, Dr Wang’s mother was dying. She held her son’s hands close to herself; in tears, she asked him to stay with her by her bed for the night. Meanwhile, Dr Wang was informed of a serious hypertension stroke in a patient in Tiaogou Village (跳沟村), over 5km away from the clinic. Always putting his patients first, Dr Wang struggled between his duty as a doctor and that of a son. He knelt down in front of his mother at her bedside. With tears rolling down his cheeks, he bid her farewell, and immediately set off for the mountains, where rain had turned the footpaths into mud, making the journey even more difficult than usual. After three hours’ life-saving effort, the patient was pulled out of danger. As a doctor, Dr Wang was satisfied with having saved the patient; but as a son, he has to bear an irreparable regret for life.
Never will he leave his patients
When Ms Wang Cuiling (王翠玲) from Zhangcong Village (張沖村) was carried by her family to Dr Wang’s clinic, she was diagnosed with a cerebrovascular accident. In spite of her serious condition, her family would not send her to the hospital because of financial difficulty.
Dr Wang kept Ms Wang at the clinic to take care of her. However, once her condition improved slightly, she got up and quietly went home. Knowing exactly how serious it could have got without timely medication, every day after seeing his patients Dr Wang would walk more than 2km to visit Ms Wang at her home to bring her proper treatment. Even though Ms Wang’s family had lost hope for her recovery, Dr Wang would not give up. Following over half a month of dedicated treatment, Ms Wang had recovered from the life-threatening illness and was even able to return to work.
“We thank the Party for cultivating such a good cadre; we thank Dr Wang and the clinic for saving my life, and the life of our whole family.” - Family of patient Wang Cuiling
“I am revived by the Subsidy” — Caring Teacher Mr Tan Daolu Mr Tan Daolu (谭道禄), a 57-year-old teacher suffering from third-degree paralysis of the left lower limb, is now teaching in Jiaoren Xiwang Primary School (教仁希望小学) in Xinwan Village (新湾乡) in Jiangxi Xiushui (江西修水). His wife has passed away and his parents are old and weak. He lives in the remote mountain where the living conditions are extremely bad. His house, built in 1964, has become very shabby now. Nonetheless, with astonishing and tenacious willpower, he has been staying in the remote mountainous area to teach at a school for 37 years on his own, performing not only the role of teacher, but also as a cook, doctor and nanny at the same time.
In the second half of 2006, the state of his stump worsened and his femur kept on deteriorating. Notwithstanding the great pain he continued to give lessons. It was only when he was unable to move did he ask for leave to have resection surgery. He had surgery on 30 December 2006, and he went back to work with a pair of walking sticks in March 2007. In the second half of 2010, he was finally transferred to Jiaoren Xiwang Primary School which is of a better condition.
Although Mr Tan has been facing family calamity and serious sickness, he insists on working without compromising his teaching quality. He has worked with sickness over a long period of time, and was treated for slight illness only on Sundays and serious illness only in summer or winter vacation. When he was teaching in the remote Xiaoliu Primary School (小流小学), his class was ranked as the first and second in every subject in the village examination just before and after he received his surgery. He is a positive person who loves working. His teaching quality has maintained at such a high standard that he was awarded Teaching Quality Prize (教学质量奖) in county and village, Outstanding Individual Prize (先进个人奖) and “Model Teacher” (师德模范) for his virtue for several times.
The Voice of Mr Tan Daolu
For people like me living in poverty-stricken mountainous area, it is extremely moving to have received such a huge amount of subsidy offered by Kerry Group Kuok Foundation that I never dream of. This shows people there is really saviour in the world.
I have led a rough life, suffering from third-degree paralysis (3级残疾) of left lower limb since 14 years old. Frequent great family calamity made my life miserable. Last year, thanks to the support and encouragement of the school and the leader of the teaching committee, I was appraised as “Caring Teacher” and began receiving subsidy from the Foundation, which is a great help taking care of my life, reviving my family, and giving us happiness, warmth and future.
In the past, my very little income had to support my high household expenditure, and I have never imagined that I could one day move to live in the city. Now with the housing allowance, I can and I dare to get a loan. I have recently spent 60,000 yuan to buy a 100m2 flat with my daughter, and I expect that next year my family will be able to live in the new house, moving away from the uninhabited, inaccessible, unconnected and unlit mountainous area. Moreover, thanks to the medical assistance allowance, my father who is over 80 and suffers from hypertension and the after effects of cerebral infarction, and my mother, who suffers from serious neck spinal disease, can finally receive timely treatment in the city. With the monthly stipends, my frugal parents can finally enjoy the basic necessities and lead their lives as happily as the elderly in the city.
The change made by the Kerry Group Kuok Foundation is such a blessing to us – it is to me like rainfall to a dying plant. I know it is very hard for me to repay for it. I can only devote the remaining energy of my old life to education for our Party, for our people. I will teach my students and the younger generation that they should maintain their integrity even when they become rich, keep happy even when they are poor. I hope the children, when they grow up, will model themselves on the Kuok Foundation to help the poor. Whatever they experience, poverty or disasters, they should still hold on to their faith and not do any wrong. When they have nothing to give, they can help others with their kind hearts. They will then understand happiness can be everywhere no matter what the situation it is. I will always love and care for our young children, and duly fulfil my duty as a teacher.
May I wish: The Kuok Foundation be stronger and stronger! Our motherland be more and more prosperous and harmonious! All the poor people can live happier and happier!
