The Fight Of The Century I was fortunate enough to be able to witness 2 competitions of the century during this 2010 winter Olympic in Vancouver. The 1st fight was the ice hockey final between the host country Canada and its southern neighbor the USA. This is the venue of the competition, the Canada Hockey Place. As you can see, more than 60000 people packed in this stadium, all with ice hockey shirts and flags in their hand to support their teams. We have Directors of our Board from both countries. Before the fight, they all showed their smiling faces for the 先礼後兵。 For Canada, ice hockey is their national sport. An ice hockey gold metal would be heavier than any of the other 13 gold metals they have already won in this winter Olympic. The whole country was hoping and waiting for the Canadian hockey team to catch their 14th and most precious gold. Although the ice hockey originated in Canada, it has become a very popular sport in the United States. They have some of the best players in the world and determine to win. The audience became very emotional when both teams even just started their warm up. Now both teams are ready, so do the leaders of their countries. I was told that there was even a bet for a case of beer between the president of the USA and the premier of Canada on which country will be the winner. The Canadian team started quickly with a very aggressive and successful offense at the early stage of the game, and scored 2 to 0 ahead of the American.
While the Canadian thought that the victory was in hand, the American certainly recover quickly to get the score back to 2:2 even at only 24 seconds left to play. You can see and feel how people's emotion changed drastically with the changing scores, from happy to desperate in the very short seconds. Canada finally made the 3 : 2 victory to beat the USA at the over time to win its 14th, and may be the most precious gold medal in this Winter Olympic. It was the team effort, not the excellent skill of any individual player which has help Canada to win this precious gold. This victory has made the Canadian across the land, from Pacific to Atlantic all feel so proud. The 2nd battle of the century of this Olympic was the figure skating final competition between two 19 years old girls,译文: 本届冬奥会的第二场世纪之战,是上演在两个19岁女孩之间的女子花样滑冰的决赛。 And Mao Asada of Japan. At least for several minutes, most of Japan and South Korea came to a standstill, the people glued to the television watching what had been described as a battle of the century. Looks like that the geopolitics, the burden of history and deep national pride rested all on the delicate shoulders of these two young and beautiful rivals. Only last year, Kim became the first woman to breach the score of 200 level. But today even that no longer guarantee a gold medal. Asada became the 1st woman to land 2 triple axels and scored 205.50. However, in the end, with the score of 228.56, Kim has taken the figure skating to a whole new level, and won an Olympic gold medal.
Sitting next to me in the picture was Julia Mancuso, one of the best alpine skiing athlete in the world with her 2 Olympic metals. I think Mancuson, Kim and Adaso all have one thing in common, they do their practices with great discipline year after year. They all believe in one thing, practice makes it perfect. Like the old Chinese saying: one minute on stage takes ten years of practice off stage. I think that is the only secret of their success, and it should be of ours as well.
Of course, President Obama lost the bet for a case of Canadian beer to his Canadian counterpart. It is also amazing to see what a healthy Competition can do to draw the very diverse people together for a common goal. A healthy competition can also help people to learn from each other and enhance their continuous improvement.
