2010年7月上旬，彭定中先生前往江西修水县为嘉里集团郭氏基金会在中国大陆的第10个“脱贫困奔小康”基地选址，以下是他想与大家分享的风景和故事。

标题原文：Health Care And Prevention Are Always Better Than Treatment

原文：
Visited 修水 last week, another poorest county in China. This is also one of the most populous county in 江西 with a population of more than 800,000. 修河 flows through the mountains of 修水 county and carry the water northeast into Bo Yan Lake. From the color of the water in the picture, you can still see the leftover impact of the very recent flood in Jiang Xi and the southern China.

上个星期，我们去考察了修水县，这是中国最贫穷的县份之一，同时也是江西省人口最多的县之一，其人口已超过80万。修河流经修水县的叠翠群山，向东北流入潘阳湖。从照片中河水的颜色，你们可以看到近来在江西以及整个华南都泛滥的洪水所留下的痕迹。

Just like many of our other Bases in the rural China, the mountain and water are all so beautiful, they can bring the real peace and harmony in your heart.

Looking from distance, those simple but elegant farm houses spread in the middle of the nice green fields provided us with such a harmonious picture.

I especially like the bamboo forest under the sun and in the gentle breeze. I can almost hear the very soft sound of swinging bamboo. It brought me back some of my sweet childhood memories.

Of course, when taking a close look, the most important of all we should focus on are the real people who live in this beautiful but very remote and poor land.

As you can see from this overly used blackboard, they do need better school facilities, but more important, good quality of teachers.

They also need more capital, as well as the technical and marketing knowledge to enable them to have the opportunity to make a better living.

Last but not the least, they do also need better medical facilities and services in the hospital so that the poor rural patients can also obtain the proper treatments.

What we see here in the picture is the general phenomena in many of the hospitals in the poor rural areas of China. Most of the hospitals don't have enough hospital beds to meet the current demands of the rural population. But I am sure that the government has already done a lot to improve the medical facilities and the quality of the medical staffs to provide better treatment. However, in addition to treatment, the bigger concern is in the area of health care and preventive measure where more resources and efforts should be made. Because the health care and preventive measures are always more important than the treatment. Our goal should be to greatly enhance this area, with that the demands for treatment would be greatly reduced, and one day we may find there are too many empty beds in the rural hospitals. By then, I believe the people of the rural China would be able to live in a much healthier and happier lives .

最后这一点也很重要，他们的的确确也需要更好的医疗设施和医护服务。这样，就算是贫穷的农民遭遇病患时，他们也可以到医院里去得到合适的治疗。

图片中的景象，在中国农村地区的很多医院里都颇为常见。在贫穷的农村地区，绝大多数医院目前所拥有的病床数都满足不了当地人口的实际所需。但是我相信政府也已经做了很多努力来改善医疗设施的水平和医护人员的技能。但是，除了治疗外，更值得我们重视的是保健和预防，我们应该在这方面投入更多的资源和精力。因为保健与预防总是比治疗更为重要。我们的目的就是要大大地提高保健与预防的水平，这样我们可以让治疗的需求取得显著的下降。直到有一天，我们会看到医院里的病床大都空空如也。到那时，我相信中国农村的人们将可以过上更健康、更快乐的生活。
