原文：记得母亲常说有人的地方就有是非。历史也告诉我们，这个社会从来都不完美，而问题良多。千年慈善，为社会带来了抚慰，但从来都没能真正解决那些严峻的社会问题。

译文：I remember my mother used to say—where there are people there are disputes.History also shows that our imperfect society has always been filled with problems. Charity has been carried out for thousands of years already. Although charity has brought short-term relief for the society, it has never uprooted any serious social problems.

原文：作为这个社会的一分子，凭着对这个社会的一点承担，15年前为了解决大山里跨代贫穷的社会问题，我们成立了素兰基金会。10年前为了解决在职贫困，跨代贫穷的社会问题，我们又成立了嘉里集团郭氏基金会。我们明白要解决这些严峻的社会问题，不能单凭一己之力，我们必须建立一个可持续可复制的模式，将之付诸实践，并在模式实践的过程中，不断地累积知识和经验进行优化，最终将之复制推广。

译文：Being part of the society, we feel committed to its well-being. Therefore, we established Sulan Foundation 15 years ago in order to solve the problems of intergenerational poverty in deep mountains; we also set up Kerry Group Kuok Foundation (KGKF) 10 years ago to solve the problems of the working poor and intergenerational poverty. We understand that our sole effort is limited and it takes the whole society together to work on solving these serious social problems. Therefore we aim to establish a sustainable and replicable model, put it into practice, and enhance it with the knowledge and experience gathered along the process, so that eventually it will be broadly replicated.

原文：我想大概是六年前，应北京大学教育基金会的邀请，有机会在北大将嘉里集团郭氏基金会的模式向北大师生做了一个全面的介绍。在座北大社会学系系主任杨善华教授，对基金会模式给我们做了点评，初次见面有幸得到杨教授对基金会模式的肯定，让我们深受鼓舞。

译文：I think it was about six years ago when I shared KGKF’s model at Peking University, at the invitation of Peking University Education Foundation. It was very encouraging to receive recognition from the Head of the Department of Sociology, Professor Yang Shanhua, who volunteered to provide us his comments which were quite positive.

原文：之后在与杨善华教授，孙飞宇教授，郭清华教授及其研究生团队的多次座谈中，得知他们一直致力于研究中国农村的贫困与发展问题。他们对基金会这些年在国内，由经济创业到社会创业的心路历程产生了浓厚的兴趣，因而成立了北京大学社会学系嘉里郭氏基金脱贫模式课题组，在北大教育基金会的赞助下，对嘉里集团郭氏基金会的脱贫困奔小康模式做了田野调查，深入访谈的研究。由社会学的角度将嘉里郭氏模式放置在中国乡村建设运动及乡村变迁的大历史背景下来进行考察，经过前后三年的不懈努力，而最终肯定了模式的推广性。

译文：We learned in subsequent exchange sessions that Professor Yang Shanhua, Professor Sun Feiyu, Professor Guo Qinghua and their graduate students’ team have been actively committed to the research of rural China’s poverty and development. As they grew interested in KGKF’s journey from economic entrepreneurship to social entrepreneurship, a research group was set up in Peking University, the Department of Sociology, especially on KGKF’s poverty eradication model. The research group was funded by Peking University Education Foundation to conduct field research and in-depth interview study on KGKF’s poverty eradication model. With the sociological perspective, KGKF’s model is scrutinised against the historical background of Rural Reconstruction Movement and continuous rural changes. With three years of unremitting efforts, the replicability of KGKF’s model is affirmed by the research results.

原文：从社会学的角度出发，北大课题组也认为基金会真正具有重要意义的地方，不仅仅是其向贫困挑战的公益性实践，还在于其组织本身存在所具有的社会道德意义。

译文：From the sociological perspective, the Peking University research group believes that the real importance of KGKF is more than just taking the challenge to tackle the serious social problems of poverty. In fact, they think the existence of organisation itself also bears huge social and moral significance.

原文：回顾这些年在与北大专家们的合作过程之中，他们一直认为我和我们基金会的同事们，是一群理想主义者。我的回复是我们肯定是一群理想主义者，但是我们更是一群 '务实' 的理想主义者，我们有理想，但是我们也坚持不懈的努力面对现实，把我们的理想一步步地去付诸实践。我们深信做点事去成功改变世界的秘诀一点也不高深，就是用心花时间坚持到底，见缝插针，把针插入别人看不见，也不愿意看见的缝里。因此最后我要感谢北大的教授和同学们，他们把这本书的书名定为“理想主义与现实改造”。

译文：In all these years collaborating with Peking University’s experts, I recall that they have always regarded KGKF’s colleagues as a group of idealists. I agree that we definitely are a group of idealists, and we are a group of 'pragmatic'idealists because we persevere in the face of reality and step by step put our ideal into practice. We are convinced that the secret recipe to changing the world is not difficult. We all need to spend time and put our heart on it, persevere and target the most pressing and neglected gaps of need. Lastly, I would like to thank professors and students at the Peking University, who titled this book as " Idealism and Reality—A Case Study and Reflection of the Social Public Welfare Organisations".
