编按：2015年12月4日，彭定中先生到北京大学代表嘉里集团郭氏基金会向10位杰出的老师颁发第一届“嘉里集团郭氏基金树人奖教金”。以下是彭先生当天的致辞。(On December 4, 2015, Dr. David Pang was invited to present the first “Teaching Awards by Kerry Group Kuok Foundation” to 10 outstanding teachers at Peking University. Read on to see the short speech delivered by him.)

 原文：正如教育基金会邓秘书长说的由于我们和北大的长期合作，每年都让我有机会回访北大校园一、两次，每次回到校园，即使在寒冬里，校园里年青热情洋溢的气息都会给人带来温暖，让我再一次受到熏陶。


译文：Just as Ms Deng of the Peking University Education Foundation said, due to our long-term cooperation with Peking University, every year I would get invited to visit the campus of Peking University once or twice. Despite the harsh winter weather, the youthful vibes here gave me a very warm welcome.


原文：我们都知道北大是全国最高的知识殿堂，能迈进北大追求知识是莘莘学子一生梦寐以求的素愿，我们也知道知识不是人生的全部，生活才是人生更多元更全面的组合。而即使是最高的学府、最好的大学，生命教育都很难在课堂上传授，因此五年多前我们开始和北大有了个长期的生活实践计划，让同学们利用我们在中国农村建立的一些精准脱贫的工作基地，作为他们亲身感受体验贫困农民生活，更深入的了解当今社会问题的平台。五年多来，我们看到同学们由最初的调研、批判、到认识、掌握问题症结所在、提出解决问题的办法、更在昨天下午的总结会上知道他们已经开始采取帮助实际解决社会问题的行动，我们为他们感到高兴和骄傲。


译文：Peking University is the highest temple of knowledge. It’s many students’ life time dream of pursuing knowledge in Peking University. We all know that knowledge is not the entirety of life; to make our life more complete and diverse we shall actually live the life. It is difficult to teach life education in the classroom,therefore, we have a long-term project with Peking University, which allows students to experience the life of poor farmers and thoroughly understand social problems through our platform – the “targeted poverty-alleviation” work bases that we have established in rural China. In five years’ time, we have seen students come the long way from focusing only on research and critique, to gradually understanding, grasping the crux of the problem, proposing solutions,and even beginning to take action. We are pleased and proud of them.

原文：我离开大学生活的日子已经有半个世纪，各位如果今天再考考我当年在学校学过的工程力学、流体动力学，我想我大概是不会及格的，但是我一辈子都会永远记得半个世纪前我在学校时对我影响深远的几位老师。他们不只是去教我知识，更重要的他们帮我树立了一个让我一生受益的人生价值观，他们让我明白，人生的意义不只是为了安身，让自己日子过得更好，更是为了立命，希望别人能因为遇到我而生命变得更美好。他们曾经用了很多心、花了很多的时间在我和同学们身上，叫我至今难忘。今天在座北大就有10位这样的老师，他们付出的心血和时间会叫很多很多北大同学终身受益，他们一直在为这个社会培养一批会做事也会做人、关心自己也关心别人、能安身也更能立命的领导人。在这里让我们一起对他们为这个国家百年树人的坚持奉献，表示我们由衷的感激和崇高的敬意，谢谢！


译文：It has been half a century since I left the university. If you quiz me now on applied mechanics and materials mechanics that I learned back then, I think I probably will not meet the passing grade. What I will never forget, are the few teachers who have left huge impacts on me. Besides passing on knowledge to me, more importantly these teachers helped shape my life values which have benefited me profoundly thereafter. They made me realise that the meaning of life is beyond securing a shelter and living a comfortable life; it is in fact about making others’ lives brighter and better because of us. I will not forget how these teachers spent a lot of heart and a lot of time on my classmates. And today right here at Peking University, we also see 10 teachers with equal dedications to life-long positive impacts on students. Please join me in expressing our sincere gratitude and highest respect to them, for their dedications to nurturing our country’s next generations, thank you!

“在学校时对我影响深远的几位老师，他们不是去教我知识，更重要的他们帮我树立了一个让一生受益的人生价值观”，嘉里教金发人省心。知识更重要，但是今天还要多少大学老师记得要教学生做人呢？

老师对学生的影响真的很重要

在学校的时候，教书教得好的老师能得到称赞，但是人品好，给学生带来好的影响的老师更令人钦佩，工作中也不乏技术经验丰富的前辈，可是同样也是做人做的更好的更受欢迎，学做事永远只是一方面，做人才是一生需要修炼的课程。

老师对学生的影响很大，做一名好老师非常不容易，期待能够有更多人品好且会教书的老师
