2007年6月，在彭先生的带领下，香港嘉里集团郭氏基金会开始着手在保靖县复兴镇扁朝村设立他们在中国大陆的第一个扶贫试点村。2009年7月初，整整2年后，彭先生重返保靖考察基金会在保靖设立的3个扶贫试点扁朝村、山河村、龙家村（此期间他曾多次前来）。至今香港嘉里集团郭氏基金会在中国大陆的扶贫试点已达近10处，分布在四川、陕西、山西、贵州、云南等省。
以下是彭先生在此次保靖之行中带给我们的风景和故事。

We have worked in BaoJing for about 2 years, with the mission to transform this one of the China's poorest county from 贫困into 小康. It will be a journey of 15 long years of efforts to make this transformation. However, I am anxious to see any early signs of changes after 2 years of hard work.译文：
保靖，这个中国最贫穷的县份之一（国家贫困县）。为了帮助她早日实现“脱贫困，奔小康”的梦想，我们在这里辛勤工作差不多已有2年。在我们的规划中这是一个为期15年的项目。但在2年之后，我还是迫不急待地想看看，我们是否已经取得一些初期的成效。

From the eyes of the poor villagers, the most evident change of all is this 8 km long concrete road. They think that this road has fundamentally change/improve their lives.译文：

To me the most important sign of change is that I began to see the mind set change in the people of 扁朝村, our first model village in BaoJing. As I told you previously, the mind set change is important because it leads to behavior change. The lady in this picture told us that the villagers now begin to realize the importance of washing hands before meals and after using the toilet.译文：
而在我来看，在扁朝村——我们的第一个试点村——所发生的最重要的变化，在于村民们思想意识上所发生的变化。如同我之前同你们所说，思想的变化尤为重要，因为它会导致行为的变化。照片中的这位妇女告诉我们，现在村民们已经认识到饭前便后洗手的重要性。

This old gentleman told me that he didn't bother to come to attend our previous meeting 2 years ago, because he suspected that we will be able to bring them any real help. A few years ago an organization of Canadian Government did come to the village tried to help, and not much was done. He didn't think we can do any better than the Canadian Government. However, in the past 2 years, our people have changed his mind. Now he began to believe that working with us together, we will be able to overcome the poverty in the village someday. I was extremely encouraged by his presence in the meeting and sharing with us how he has changed his mind and built the confidence on us.译文：
这位老人告诉我，2年前他没来参加我们的会议，因为他怀疑我们是否能为他们带来一些真正的帮助。在前些年，也曾有一个加拿大的政府机构来到这里想做同样的事，但最后结果是“没有什么结果”。老人认为我们不会比加拿大政府强到哪里去。然而在过去的2年时间里，我们的工作人员让他改变了自己的看法。现在他开始相信，只要大家齐心协力，终有一天我们会带领这个村庄脱离贫困。老人的与会以及他情真意切的分享（关于他对我们的看法如何发生变化，他如何对我们从没有信心变为有信心），让我受到极大的鼓舞。

I was sadden by the garbage piled up by the villagers along the beautiful hills. Looks like we have a lot work to do to build up the public awareness for a healthy and beautiful environment.译文：

To ensure these children to have equal opportunities as children growing up in other part of the country, we need to provide them with proper education.译文：

This is our 3rd model village in BaoJing, 龙家村. It is a poor village but has been well preserved ecologically so far. Moving forward, it will be a challenge for us to help them grow economically while maintaining a great harmony with the environment.译文：

During the trip I have also seen the signs of the mind set change of many local grass root government officials. They gave me the optimism and hope that our mission will eventually be accomplished one day.译文：

Compare with 2 years ago, I think that we have come a long way. Of course, we still have a long way to go. It is a journey of a thousand miles, and I believe we have successfully made that very difficult first step.译文：
