2012年10月上旬，彭先生前往广西着手创建嘉里集团郭氏基金会在中国的第14个脱贫基地。以下是他想和我们分享的故事和风景。

Just finished a trip to 广西 to establish our 14th 脫貧 Base in China. This was the third time I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful southern province of China bordering the ASEAN countries.

刚刚从广西出差回来。这次去广西，是为了建立我们在中国的第14个脱贫基地。这是我第3次有机会踏足这个与东盟国家接壤的风景优美的南方省份。

原文：
As always, we visited a few poor counties 国家级贫困县 in the northwestern part of the province, and finally selected 都安瑶族自治县 to be our Base in 广西.  都安 has about 700,000 population, most of them are 瑶族 and 壯族. It has about 4,000 square kilometers of land, about four times the size of Hong Kong. However, 90 percent of the land are all rock mountains. The scenery is great. However, there is not enough flat arable land for the people to make a reasonable living.

和往常一样，我们在广西省西北部考察了几个国家级贫困县，最终选定都安瑶族自治县作为我们在广西的脱贫基地。都安拥有大约70万的人口，其中瑶族和壮族占绝大多数，占地4千平方公里，大致相当于4个香港的面积，不过其中90%的面积都是山岩地貌，所以这里风景很美，但是因为缺乏适宜耕种的土地，人民的生活水平一直难以提高。

Visited some poor villages and met with the village management committee 村委會 , and the representatives of the villagers.  Tried to better understand their urgent needs and the root cause of their problems.

译文：
我们考察了几个贫困村，并且和村委会以及村民代表们开会，试图更多地了解他们最迫切的需求是在哪些方面，并探寻出问题的根源所在。

Also visited the village and township schools. As you can see here, they have doubled the two different levels of classes into one very crowded classroom. Those are the future of our society, we need to help them to have the capability to think and think independently. They would therefore one day have the ability to create opportunities for themselves and for others .

译文：
我们也考察了村里和镇里的学校。你们可以看见，他们让两个不同年级的班挤在同一间教室里上课，教室显得非常拥挤。这些孩子们是社会的未来所在，我们要帮助他们建立思考——并且是独立思考——的能力。这样有一天他们将可以为自己，也为他人创造机会。

原文：
Catching fishes in this muddy river got to be some of the great childhood memories for those boys. Although I didn't see they had too much luck in catching any fishes that day. I do hope they would have much better opportunities to live meaningful and joyful lives, and making contributions to the society when they grow up.

译文：
在这条泥泞的小河里捕鱼已经成为这些男孩们快乐童年回忆的一部分。虽然那天他们看起来运气不佳，好像一条鱼也没有抓到。我真的希望等他们长大的时候，他们可以有机会过上更有意义、更有乐趣的生活，同时也为社会作出他们的贡献。

With the very limited arable land, to feed a huge population, the villagers have to find other means to creat some additional income to help their families. What you see here is a business developed by the villagers to raise the bamboo rat 竹鼠 to sell to the market.


译文：
地少人多，村民们不得不另寻途径来补贴家用。你们现在看到的是村民们开发出了养殖竹鼠并向市场出售的方式，来为他们增加一些收入。

原文：
The pumpkins just harvested from the field looked nice in this farmer's house, but not nice enough for the peasants to live comfortable lives. Just like many villages in other parts of the country, many of the young workers in the villages have migrated to the cities to find better paid jobs and make some additional money to help their families.

译文：
这户村民的家里放着刚从地里收获不久的南瓜。这些南瓜看上去长得还不错，但是并不足以让村民们过上小康的生活。就像中国其他地方的很多农村一样，这个村里的大部分年轻劳动力都外出打工去了，因为在城市里可以找到收入更高的工作，他们用这种方式来补贴家用。

As a results, in many of the villages I visited in the past years I met many old people stayed home alone 空巢老人.

译文：
结果就是村子里出现了很多空巢老人。在过去的几年里，我见过很多这样的村子。

Also I saw many young children left behind by their migrated working parents 留守兒童 to be taken cared by their aging grandparents in the villages.

译文：
同时，村子里也出现了大批的留守儿童，这些孩子只能由他们年迈的爷爷奶奶来看管。

Looking at this picture makes me feel sad. This little child has a lot of corns but without the love of her parents. Every child in the world deserves growing up with the love of parents. I believe that's one of the unfair distributions of the opportunities, and the root cause of the disharmony we are facing in the world today. Looks like we all have a lot work to do to help to address some of the very critical social problems like this kind in the years to come.

译文：
看到这张照片真让我感到心痛。这个小孩有很多的玉米，但是却得不到父母的关爱。世界上的每个小孩都应该在父母的关爱下成长。我相信这是机会分配不平均的一种，也是造成当今社会不和谐的根本原由。看来要解决这些严峻的社会问题，我们都还有很多的工作要去做。

大山深处有人家。希望这些人能有所改变，不只是生活，更是心灵。看这么多照片关于小孩子，教育一定是要开展的重点，对后面的成果满怀期待。

希望他们在基金会的帮助下，日子越来越好

中国正在经历巨大的变化，农村劳动力进城务工，一方面带来了严重的社会问题，
另一方面也推动了经济增长，更为重要的是，“农民工”的意识开始发生改变，当
他们带着这种改变在一年一度的春节时期回到农村的时候，他们会更加急切地把自
己的感受带给自己的孩子——最重要而且最明显的变化是主动地支持小孩接受完整
的教育。这是让人欣喜的。

竹鼠我曾经捉过，牙齿锋利，会咬人，不过肉好吃，价格也比较贵。
年轻人离开家，去寻找金钱寄回家里去，让一家人幸福。
网上最近流行问“你幸福吗？”一个回答，“心里有牵挂就是幸福“感动了我。

孩子们就是未来的希望啊！

两个年级到一起上课，对于老师和孩子来说，都是一件不容易的事情，特别是像他们有那么多的孩子。
在农村，很多的孩子因为没有得到应有的父爱母爱，所以，他们就野了很多。在我们这一代，这种情况是很严重的，我们村有很多变坏或是没有读书的孩子，很大程度上都是因为自己从小就被贴上了“留守儿童”的标签！
希望那里的孩子能比我们这一代走的更好，得到应有的父母的爱！
