2011年9月初，彭定中先生前往甘肃考察，以下是他想与大家分享的风景和故事。

原文：
Early Sept I had opportunity to visit the mountain region of 甘肃 for the first time.

译文：
9月初，我有机会去了一趟甘肃的山区，这是我第一次来到这个地方。

原文：
It is the northwest extension of the 黄土高原. This was the scenery of the early autumn. I was told if we come back a month latter, it would be a very different picture, all yellow and grey.

译文：
这里地处黄土高原的西北延伸处，我们看到的是初秋的风光。人们告诉我，如果我们一个月后再回到这里，我们将会看到遍地黄叶、一片灰暗的瑟瑟秋景，和现在看到的景致完全不同。

原文：
In this northwestern mountain region, some people live on the top of the 2700 meter of high mountains.

译文：
在这大西北的山区里，有些人住在2700米高的大山上。

原文：
There are also some people live at the bottom of the valley.

译文：
也有一些人住在谷底。

原文：
With less than 300 mm rainfall a year, the very limited surface water as you see here was collected in this muddy creek. Besides, it is not easy to find a reliable source of ground-water in this arid mountain region either. With that in mind, water shortage has been the most critical problem people have been facing through the years.

译文：
这里年降雨量不到300毫米。就像你们所看到的，非常有限的地表水汇聚到了这条泥泞的小溪里。此外，要在这片干旱的山区里找到一处可用的地下水也并不是件容易的事。因为这个原因，很多年来，缺水成为这里的人们所面临的最为迫切的问题。

原文：
Although from the other side of the mountain you can almost see the Yellow River from distance.

译文：
尽管远远望去，你几乎可以看得见黄河正在从山的另一边流过。

原文：
As you can see here, at this upstream segment of the Yellow River near 青海, the Yellow River is not yellow at all. The water is so clean and clear. 俗话说：“跳进黄河也洗不清”，但这句话在这里并不是很适用。

译文：
这段黄河靠近青海，是黄河的上游。正如你们所看到的，这段黄河清澈、干净，一点都不黄。俗话说“跳进黄河也洗不清”，但这句话在这里并不是很适用。

原文：
Obviously, to pump and to pipe the Yellow River water across and up onto this high mountain ridge is economically not a feasible solution for the water shortage problem of those villagers living there.

译文：
很显然，对居住在这里的村民们来说，把黄河水抽调到这大山上来并不是一个经济、可行的办法。

原文：
In the past years, to better preserve the limited surface water from the rainfall for irrigation, the villagers started to cultivate the slope of the mountain into the 梯田。

译文：
在过去的年月里，为了更好地保留住有限的地表水来用于灌溉，村民们逐渐地在山坡上开垦出了梯田。

原文：
They have also learned how to better preserved the precious surface water by using the thin film to cover the soil so that the evaporation of the moisture from the ground can be minimized.

译文：
他们也学会了用薄膜来盖住土地，这样可以最大程度地防止水分的蒸发，以达到为土壤保留住水分的目的。

原文：
To obtain the precious drinking water, the villagers have to connect the fabric to the roof and hope to collect every drop of the rain water from the roof and store it in the underground water storage basin for consumption.

译文：
为了获得无比宝贵的饮用水，村民们不得不用布匹来连接屋顶，以期把降落在屋顶的每一滴雨水都收集起来，储存在地下蓄水池里以供日常的消耗。

原文：
The villagers have also learned to use a simple devise to catch the solar power to boil water to save energy.

译文：
村民们也学会了利用一项简单的发明来捕捉太阳能用以烧水，以达到节能的目的。

原文：
I always enjoy visiting the villager's home and have a chat with the elders. I have learned many things about rural China and about life from them through the years. They would normally treat me with the best they have. In this arid mountain region, a cup of tea which we normally take for granted can be very precious. I couldn't turn down their hospitality, but even today, I still feel guilty for drinking that cup of tea which had consumed some of their very precious drinking water.

译文：
我总是喜欢去村民们家里坐坐，和老人们聊聊天。这些年来，从这些村民们那里，我了解到很多有关中国农村的情况，也学习到很多有关生活的真理。村民们通常都会用他们能做到的最好的方式来招待我。在这干旱贫瘠的山区里，一杯在我们看来稀松平常的茶水显得至为宝贵。我不能够拒绝他们的热情款待。但是，即使到今天，我仍然为喝了那杯茶而感到内疚。因为那杯茶多少消耗了一些他们的饮用水，而这些水对村民们来说又是多么的宝贵。

原文：
As we discussed many times before, poverty has no reason to be associated with lazy and dirty behaviors. Under such extremely difficult external environments, it is great to see that they continue to live their lives with great pride and dignity.

译文：
就像我们以前多次讨论过的，贫穷与懒惰以及脏乱差并没有必然的联系。在如此困难的外部环境下，这些人们还是带着尊严和自豪继续生活下去，这让我觉得十分欣慰。

原文：
They managed to send their children to the small mountain village school for proper education.

译文：
他们克服种种苦难，把他们的孩子送进山村里的小学校，让孩子们得到适当的教育。

原文：
From this 12 simple characters on the blackboard in this small village primary school classroom, I think that they do have a good teacher who is trying to teach them not just knowledge, more important, also the right attitude about life.

译文：
看到村小学教室里黑板上写着的这简简单单的12个汉字，我想这些孩子们的确有着一位很好的老师。这位老师不仅仅教给他们知识，更重要的是，教给他们正确的生活态度。

原文：
I am thinking of those villagers who have been living so high and so far in the mountain and so close to the nature.

译文：
此时此刻，我想起那些村民们来。他们住在那么远、那么深的大山里，与大自然那么接近。

原文：
With a humble and grateful smile on their face.

译文：
他们的脸上带着谦恭的笑容，对生活心存感激。

原文：
From the bottom of my heart, I have a great respect to these villagers, men and women, young and old, because under such an adverse external environment, they know how to live a simple life with a simple heart with gratitude and pride.

译文：
无论男女老少，我从心底对这些村民们怀着深深的敬意。因为在如此恶劣的外部环境下，他们知道怎样带着感恩和骄傲，用一颗简单的心去过简单的生活。

去过甘肃很多地方，天水，定西，兰州，威武，酒泉，敦煌，沿着陇海兰新线走，过了陕西的宝鸡然后就进入甘肃境内，你可以从火车窗里明显感到风景的不一样。我第一次去时，看到山上没有一棵树，我对朋友说，我很喜欢这种赤裸裸的荒凉。我去过甘肃最穷的一个县，定西的渭源县，小小的县城，人们脸上却洋溢着很满足的微笑，那时候我很感动。这里的经济支柱是土豆，除此而外，还有中药材以及不算发达的旅游业，比如老君山，莲峰山等等。这里的水，必须泡上茶才可以喝，不然会有味道，这是我朋友给我说的。我去过渭源县的最好的高中，渭源一中，朋友说，这里的老师最好的是毕业于西北师范大学。这里县城人们每晚中午和晚上准时收听县文化局的广播，像极了我们以前农村的生活。
我一直被西北那种赤裸裸的贫穷震撼，我说是赤裸裸的贫穷，因为你不用被告知，就可以感受到，从那里的扬尘，从人们的脸上。。。。。。呵呵，很开心基金会会去那里做些什么，希望越来越好。

大山、艰苦的环境孕育了西北农村人朴素厚实的品格，谦恭朴实的西北人没有那么多的心机，一颗简单的心过着一种简单的生活。

情绪左右了你，你死定啦！不学会坚持，你什么都做不好！

对了西北最初的了解是某次从电影里听到陕甘地区风行的信天游，声音辽阔苍凉，听了很震撼。后来看了电影《黄土地》，更是为西北人民那种坚韧的精神折服。

偏爱天才与疯子，
觊觎一夜暴富或突然猝死，
梦想做一只特立独行的猪！

看到这些照片，心里挺矛盾的。我们那边和甘肃的山区，差别真是太大了！
我很喜欢那个老师写的那12个字，这种态度值得我们学习。
彭先生说的和他们的一杯茶水，自己觉得很内疚，我很感动。的确，在他们那里，水比油贵！
当然，彭先生，您一年三百六十五天到外面跑，自己也要注意身体！只要好的身体，我们才能做更多的事，给那些贫困的中国农村带去希望！
