2010年11月10日，彭定中先生在陕西省淳化县润镇甘沟村视察嘉里集团郭氏基金会在当地的脱贫示范基地，以下是他想与大家分享的风景和故事。

原文：
Shanxi is our 6th province in China where we have been trying to help the poor peasants to build up their capabilities so that they can create better opportunities for themselves and eventually for others. Gan Gou village is the first village we began to establish our 'out of poverty' model about one and half years ago.

译文：
在过去的几年里，我们一直致力于帮助中国的贫穷农民建立起他们自己的能力，这样他们将可以为自己创造出更好的机会，最终他们也会为别人去创造更好的机会。我们逐步地在好几个省展开这样的工作，陕西是第六个省。而甘沟村是我们在大概一年半前在陕西省建立起来的第一个脱贫示范村。

原文：
I have not been back to the 甘沟 village for quite a while. It was really nice to see some very positive changes happened here in the past year. The villagers are as hospitable as ever, standing in line to welcome us.

译文：
我有一段时间没有回到甘沟村了。看到在过去的一年这里所发生的一些变化，真是令人感到振奋。村民们一如既往地热情好客，我们受到他们的列队欢迎。

Also we were welcomed by the famous Shanxi big drums.

译文：

With the local grown apple and walnut!

We were very happy to see that many villagers have just moved out from their old caves and moved into some the very well built earthquake resistant new houses.

我们很高兴地看到，很多村民已经从老旧的地窑里搬出来，住进了设计精良、有防震功能的新房子。

原文：
This is the first time I saw a new warm bed under construction. It is still a very popular sleeping as well as dining and family get together area of the house in northern China.

译文：
这是我第一次看见正在修建的新炕。在华北地区，炕仍然是老百姓家里睡觉、吃饭和家人团聚的重要场所。

This year's corn harvest looked quite good！

译文：
看来今年玉米的收成很不错！

The peanuts harvest also looked great!

译文：
花生的收成看来也很好！

原文：
I guess these are what you all like to eat the most, the delicious red chili. It may not be as spicy as what you have at home in Hunan. I guess that It will do the job to keep the villagers' stomachs hot through out the entire winter.

译文：
这些红辣椒大概是你们的最爱。它们可能没有你们湖南老家的那样辣。在寒冷的冬天，我想村民们可以用它来暖和自己的肠胃。

原文：
This male pig 种猪 also looks very healthy. I am sure that the villagers are all looking forward for him to help to bringing more healthy baby pigs to the village.

译文：
这头种猪看上去也很壮硕。我相信村民们都指望着它帮村里带来更多健康、可爱的小猪。

原文：
Yes, those material related changes were all evident and have began to bring better lives to the poor villagers. However,very important, we have also help to make some mind set and behavior changes among the villagers in the past year. We truly believe that it is those mind set changes which will make the greatest impacts and last for a long long time. I still remember this lovely little boy sitting in the front row. When I asked him whether he washes his hands before meals and after toilet. He was really nervous in front of the big crowd at the beginning, but finally gave me a clear 'yes'.

译文：
是的。这些物质上的改变都显而易见，并且已经开始在改善村民们的生活。但是，在过去的一年里，我们也在帮助村民们从思维方式和生活习惯上去产生一些改变，这点尤为重要。我们坚信，正是这些思维方式上的改变，将会为村民们带来最为重大的影响，并且将会持续很长很长的时间。我还记得这个坐在第一排的可爱小男孩。我问他饭前便后有没有洗手。刚开始的时候，因为是在一大群人面前，他显得很紧张，但后来他终于很清晰地向我回答说，他有洗手。

原文：
Of course, among all these changes, what means the most to me are the wonderful sunshine smiles now start to appear on those simple, innocent 朴实faces of the poor peasants. From their smiling faces, I began to see their hope and confidence for a brighter and better future. We may still have a long way to go, but I think that we have already made a very important first giant step of this very long and difficult journey.

译文：
当然，在所有这些改变中，对我来说最为重要的，是这些贫穷的人们朴实的脸上，已经开始显出灿烂的笑容。从他们的笑容里，我开始看到他们的希望和信心，那里面装着他们对美好未来的无限憧憬。可能我们还有很长的路要走。但是，在这漫长而艰辛的长征路上，我想我们已经迈出了非常重要的第一步。
