2010年5月上旬，彭定中先生率香港嘉里集团郭氏基金会一行再次来到贵州丹寨，以下是他想与大家分享的风景和故事。

标题原文：To Be Their Own Master and Standing On Their Own Feet

原文：
Came back to Dan Zhai to visit the Muo village again. The villagers hospitality and enthusiasm always deeply touch our hearts.

译文：
我们再次来到丹寨看望苗寨的人们。村民们的殷勤好客，每次都让我们深受感动。

原文：
The men women and children were all looking as pure as innocent as ever.

译文：
不管男人、女人还是小孩，看上去永远是那么纯真无邪。

原文：
The field is also as green as ever after the drought a few months ago.

译文：
经历数月前的大旱后，田野也恢复了以往的郁郁葱葱。

原文：
Although we can still see the cracks in the field as the evidence of the recent severe drought in the southwest China.

译文：
但我们仍然可以看到田地里有一些干涸的裂痕，这是前不久西南大旱留下的痕迹。

原文：
Although some houses were a bit broken which may need be repaired, both inside and outside the house were so clean. I always respect the people who can keep themselves clean. The clean people are normally diligent, with dignity and self respect.

译文：
虽然部分房屋有一些破旧，可能需要做一些修缮，但是，无论房子里面还是房子外面，到处都打扫得很干净。我总是敬重那些爱护卫生的人。这些人通常都很勤快，他们爱护自己的名誉，懂得自重。

原文：
Looks like the fruit of their hard work is almost ready for harvest. I was really happy to find out that their water mellon will have a very good price this year. With that I hope they would have an easier life.

译文：
看来村民们辛勤的劳动很快就会带来丰收的硕果了。得知他们的西瓜今年将会有一个很好的价格时，我真的很高兴。我希望这样他们的日子就可以过得更容易一些。

原文：
The tobacco farm was also looking good.

译文：
烟田里的烟草，看上去长得也很不错。

原文：
The new village clinic is getting ready to serve the villagers soon. In the past year we have also been helping to enhance the quality of the village doctors. All these efforts are aiming to make the villagers healthier and happier.

译文：
新建的村卫生所很快就会向村民们开放。在过去的一年里，我们也一直在帮助村医们提高他们的专业技能。所有这些努力，都是为了让村民们过上更健康、更快乐的生活。

原文：
What has pleased me the most this trip was that the villagers has begun to gain the new spirit and new attitude about how to improve their own lives. Instead of just sitting there waiting for others to give, they tried to help themselves first. You must all remember the old Chinese saying, the people who help themselves would gain more help from others.

This was exactly the approach they took to build this and other roads in the village.

译文：
此次走访丹寨，最让我感到欣慰的是看到村民们已经开始在用全新的精神面貌和人生态度去面对生活。他们没有坐等别人送来东西，而是努力展开自助。你们一定都要记住中国的那句古话，“自助者，天助之”。

这是他们自建的村公路的入口处。

原文：
The villagers did put a lot of their own labors to build the road themselves, and chip in all the money they can afford as posted on the wall.

译文：
为了筹建这条公路，村民们的确投入了很多劳动力，也尽他们所能地筹集了一些资金，如同墙上张贴的公告所示。

原文：
As a results, they have earned their own dignity and gained other people's respect. They have learned how to stand on their own feet, and become the real masters of their own lives.
For me this has been a great visit !

译文：
正因如此，他们为自己赢得了尊严，获得了别人的尊重。他们已经学会利用自己的力量站立起来，开始做真正掌控自己命运的主人。
对我来说，这真是一次愉快的旅程！
