2011年2月16日，彭定中先生前往闽北山区为嘉里集团郭氏基金会在中国大陆的第10个“脱贫困奔小康”基地选址，以下是他想与大家分享的风景和故事。

原文：
I have just completed a visit to the mountain region of the northern Fujen. Just like the mountains of many of your hometowns, they are all so beautiful before we, people have a chance to touch and spoil it. They are all as pretty as those mountains and clouds in the Chinese paintings except they are all real.

译文：
刚刚去了一趟闽北山区。和你们家乡的许多大山一样，这里的山也是如此之美。它们就在我们面前，人们可以去触摸，去欣赏。那山，那云，美得就像一幅中国画，只不过它们都是真的。

原文：
The villages of the 闽北山区 without the normally ugly 小洋房 which you can find in so many rural villages across the country, are so nicely blended into the natural surroundings.

译文：
在闽北山区的村子里，并没有在中国农村里通常都可以看到的那些小洋房。村庄如此完美地融入进了周遭的自然环境中。

原文：
As expected, when you take a closer look, most of the old houses need a good renovation work badly.

译文：

When walked inside the house, you can find the villagers are living in a simple but difficult life. However, they have demonstrated that people can be poor, but doesn't have to be dirty. They may be living in a poor life but with great dignity.

译文：
当你走进这些房子里去时，你会发现，住在里面的人们，都在过着简陋而艰辛的生活。不过他们证明了一个道理：穷，并不一定就得脏乱差。他们的生活可能是很穷困，但是他们活得很有尊严。

原文：
I think the people live in this remote northern mountain region of Fujen would naturally have much less opportunities than that of the people in the southern part of the province. Without the raw material, no market, and with very poor accessibility to the outside world, little industry has been developed in the past years.

译文：
和闽南地区相比，闽北山区要偏远得多，从而导致这里的机会比闽南地区要少得多。没有原材料，没有市场，和外界的联通也相当匮乏，一直以来，这里并没有形成什么产业。

原文：
With the mountains accounted for more than 85% of the land in the region, it is extremely difficult to develop agriculture with any economical viability either.

Other than tea and bamboo, mushroom farming like this one becomes one of the key agriculture products of the region.
Without the viable means to make a decent living, today the hard working migrant workers provide the major source of income for the villages.

Few good teachers are willing to stay in the remote mountains and can not see their future development. Without good quality of teachers, schools are losing students.

原文：
In addition to the education, the villages are also facing the similar problems on health. Not many doctors with good quality are willing to come to the remote rural region to provide the badly needed services to the poor peasants.

译文：
除了教育外，在医疗卫生方面，村民们也遇到了类似的问题。好医生们大都不愿意到这种偏远地区来，所以贫穷的村民们所迫切需要的医疗服务，在这里也显得相当匮乏。

原文：
With the above social problems in mind, we have decided to pick up this poor county in the northern mountain region of Fujen to be our 10th poverty alleviation base in China. We are ready to spend the next 15 years to change the poor people's mind set and help them to develop capabilities so that they can create opportunities not only for themselves but also others. It looks like we have a long and difficult journey ahead of us. With the strong will and light heart, we are on our way.

译文：
在闽北山区的这个贫困县，因为这里有着如此多的社会问题，我们决定在这里创建我们在中国的第10个脱贫基地。我们已经准备好在这里大干一场。在接下来的日子里，我们会用15年的时间，去改变这些贫穷村民们的思维方式，帮助他们建立起自己的能力，以致有一天，他们不仅可以为自己，也将可以为他人创造出机会。看来，摆在我们面前的，将是一条漫长而艰辛的长征路。但是，怀着坚定的信念和轻松的心情，我们上路了。
