Hope you all still remember this picture which I showed you many months ago. It was a very dirty, broken, smelly public toilet at the entrance of the Tian Shan village when I visited it for the first time in 2010.

It was not just the public toilet unbearable, the whole village was very dirty, garbage was all over the place.

This is one of the very poor villages in Hubei. We were thinking how can we help them to get out of the poverty. During my first communication session, I told the village management committee and the villagers, the condition for us to help them is for them to first show that they want to help themselves. For the management committee to mobilize the villagers to quickly clean up all the garbage would be a first good sign to show us of their determination.

田山村是湖北省的一个贫困村。我们在想怎样可以帮助这里的人们摆脱贫困。在和村民们第一次举行的交流会上，我告诉村委会和村民们，我们到这里来帮助他们，是有条件的，那就是他们首先要展示出他们自己有帮助自己的决心，而不是光想着依赖我们。我告诉他们，如果村委会可以动员村民们迅速地把所有的垃圾都清理干净，给整个村子做一个大扫除，这会是他们向基金会表明决心的第一个非常好的信号。

原文：
Back to the village again this time, I have to give a lot of credit to the party secretary and the head of the village. Under their leadership and the determination of all the villagers, Tien Shan Cun has made an extremely impressive change.

译文：
这次再回到田山村，我必须要好好地表扬这里的村支书和村长。在他们的带领下，加上全体村民的齐心协力，田山村的卫生状况有了十分显著的改观。

原文：
I could not find any garbage on the floor even I tried very hard to look for it.

译文：
即便我很仔细地想从地上找出一点垃圾来，我也看不到一丁点的垃圾了。

原文：
In stead of garbage, what was there to welcome us was the beautiful lady's dancing team and a new public toilet. I did take the opportunity to use and inspect the toilet. I have to say without any odor, this must be one of the cleanest public toilet I have been. I was also told that with this new toilet, the village has also developed a toilet maintenance system to make sure this positive change can be sustainable.

译文：
以前随处可见的垃圾没有了，取而代之的，是这个神采焕发的女腰鼓队和这座崭新漂亮的公厕欢迎我们的再次到来。我特地使用和参观了一下这个公厕。我必须得说，这个公厕一点气味都没有，是我所见过的最干净的公厕之一。村民们还告诉我，除了建起这座公厕外，他们也开发了一套和它相配套的公厕维护体系，以确保这样的整洁、卫生可以一直保持下去。

Also I saw that under our help, people began to come up with innovative ideas to develop some higher value products in the village so they can have better income.

译文：

原文：
Of course, what has impressed me the most, the most important change of all was the smiling faces of the villagers. From those beautiful sunshine faces, I can see that they have gained the confidence and hope for a brighter and better future.

当然，最让我难以忘怀的，是在所有的变化中，最重要的变化其实在于这些村民们的笑脸。从这些美丽、灿烂的笑脸上，我看到了人们对美好未来所怀有的无限信心与希望。
