2011年9月底，彭定中先生考察嘉里集团郭氏基金会在四川绵竹的扶贫基地，以下是他想与大家分享的风景和故事。

Came back to visit the Mien Zu Base recently. The shadow of the 512 earthquake is can still be seen here and there.

译文：
前不久我回了一趟绵竹的基地。在那里，仍然不时可以看到5•12大地震所留下的痕迹与阴影。

原文：
I still remember the shocking feeling when standing on this elementary school site right after the earthquake. The school buildings were all collapsed. It tragically took away more than hundred lives of the students and teachers.

译文：
我至今仍然记得地震后不久当我站在这所小学的废墟前时所受到的那种震惊。当时，这所学校的校舍完全倒塌了，100多名师生在这里遇难。

原文：
I can never forget my first meeting with the villagers of the 新农村. When they talked about what they had gone through during the earthquake with tears, I couldn't stop the tears from my eyes either.

Revisited the earthquake damaged area recently. With the help provided by the entire country, I saw the completely rebuilt new elementary school from the ruin.

With our help, the 2000 brand new houses were completed in time for the villagers to move in. The old village of 红岩村 was pretty much destroyed and buried during the earthquake.

The trees we planted a few years ago now becomes a small forest. It's a good feeling to know that the trees we planted previously can now provide the shades for our children to enjoy.

原文：
Outside the houses, the villagers have been trying to use every single piece of the available land to grow the food and vegetables to help to support their daily lives.

译文：

原文：
Through our health education programs, we are helping the villagers to establish the good hygiene practices. A very important first step is to develop and implement a garbage collection system and process.

译文：
通过我们的卫生教育项目，我们在帮助村民们建立起良好的卫生习惯。这其中很重要的第一步，就是创立和执行一套垃圾收集体系与流程。

原文：
With the good participation of the villagers, and the help of these garbage collecting carts, it looks like that the simple garbage collection system and process begin to work. As a results, I couldn't find a single piece of garbage on the ground during my recent visit.

译文：
在村民们的积极参与和这些垃圾收运车的帮助下，看来这套简单的垃圾收集体系与流程已经开始奏效。其结果就是，在我近来的考察途中，我在地上找不到一丁点的垃圾。

原文：
As usual, I treasure the opportunities to be able to communicate with the villagers directly through these communication sessions. I congratulated them for what they have accomplished so far. I also challenged them for their will and abilities to maintain and continue to enhance their beautiful and comfortable living environments for another 10 to 15 years. This would directly reflect the real quality of people. I told them that It took us only one and half year to complete the 2000 houses with high quality after the earthquake. It may take us another 15 years together to enhance the quality of people to match with the quality of those beautiful houses. Instead of the hardware, It is the software which is so difficult to develop and that's what this country needs the most today.

译文：
和往常一样，我很珍惜可以在这些会议上直接和村民们进行沟通的机会。我先是祝贺他们取得了至今为止这些不错的成绩。同时，我也向他们发出了这样的疑问，在未来的10到15年，他们是否仍然会有这样的意愿，以及这样的能力，来长期保持以及继续提高他们现在所拥有的这些美丽而舒适的生活环境？这很可能直接反映出人的真正的素质。我告诉他们，在地震之后，我们用很高的标准建好了这2000所新房子，这只花了我们一年半的时间。但是，要让住在这些房子里的人的素质能和这些房子本身的素质相匹配，这很可能需要我们大家再共同努力15年。困难之处并不在于建立这些硬件，而是在于建立这些软件，而软件正是这个国家今天所最需要的东西。

所以关键真的是软件力量
有信念有坚持有原则的国民才能“可持续发展”啊！

是啊！我们可以建很多的房子，但最重要的是不是这些，而是要让我们国家的全民素质挺高上去。
我相信在村民们的心里，他们是从困难中走过来的，15年的坚持，他们一定做好的。

为天地立心，为生民立命，为往圣继绝学，为万世开太平！

要让住在这些房子里的人的素质能和这些房子本身的素质相匹配
我想是的，生活中的人该具备引发有的素质，这不仅仅是知识来衡量的。
（二）地震结束了吗？没有，远远没有，在我看来，这件事中所体现出来的种种精神和爱都该深华下去。可是，时间有时是毒药啊，我看到很多人以慢慢麻木了，对那个埋葬了无数生命的地震毫无感知了。我不知道这是对大自然的无奈，还是所谓的世态炎凉。
生活还得进行！
