Just returned from a visit to陕西省淳化县. We established this poverty-alleviation Base in 2009. It is located at the southern tip of the 黄土高原. Shortage of water and isolation from the outside world make it one of the poorest counties in the country 国家级贫困县.译文：

Compared with 5 years ago, as you can see here in the picture, it has made drastic changes. For example, the old caves disappeared, and with the help of the newly established irrigation system, now we can see a piece of nice green farm land.

Still remember it was 5 years ago in this village 甘沟村, where I had a communication session with the village representatives. The first thing I told them was that the reason we came was not to make money 为利 or to become famous 为名. What we are hoping for is simply to work with them to bring them a better life in the future. All we want to see one day are the bigger and brighter smiles on their innocent faces. However, to accomplish that they have to understand and practice this old Chinese teaching, 自助，人助，天助的古訓，in that particular order. Help yourself first, then other people would provide you with help, and even God would then want to help you. That day during our first meeting they made their commitments. Five years have passed, today it looks like they surely have not disappointed me!

Five years ago, apple was pretty much the only principle agricultural produce in the county. However, after years of repeatedly producing one single product and over-applying chemical fertilizers, soil degradation has gradually become so serious that the land is no longer suitable for growing apple. The apple trees in the region have generally passed the age of high yield. It is time for rotation, and the villagers need to develop some new crop produce to replace apple for the region.
译文：
五年前，苹果是这个县唯一的支柱性农产品。但是，年复一年地种植单一品种，以及对化肥的滥用，使得这里的土地逐渐退化，以至于已经不再适合苹果种植。这里的苹果树也渐渐地过了高产期。是时候在这片土地上进行轮作了，村民们需要开发新的农作物来取代苹果。

Under the leadership of this loving and caring role model 爱心带头人, and with the Foundation's help, some of the villagers have transformed successfully from apple farmers to tomato farmers. As we all know, no change or transformation has ever come easy. They did it, and did it by helping themselves first.

When I met this lady about 3 years ago, she just started her small pig farming endeavor. Today, she is talking about running a pig farming business with 300 pigs. She and other loving role models all have followed the teaching of the 自助，人助，天助的古訓, stood on their own feet first, then got the help from the Foundation and others. They made it to success with great dignity and respect from all of us.

三年前我见到这位妇女时，她的养猪事业才刚刚起步。现在，她已经在管理一个拥有300头猪的养猪场。她和别的爱心带头人都遵循了“自助，人助，天助”的古训。他们先是用自己的双脚站起来，然后，基金会和别的方面给了他们一些帮助。他们很有尊严地通过自己的努力取得了成功，赢得了我们所有人的尊重。

Now these loving and caring role models are ready to pay it forward – by spreading their success and helping the people surrounding them. With the help of the Foundation they have started to form coops 合作社 and have invited other villagers to join them, including the poor and underprivileged people in the village. Facilities expansion is underway, with the hope to grow these coops into enterprises.

现在这些爱心带头人已经准备好把更多的爱传递出去——他们将自己的成功经验传授给身边的人，好帮助他们也取得成功。在基金会的帮助下，这些爱心带头人组建了合作社，并邀请其他的村民，包括那些贫困、无助的人们来加入。合作社正在进行设施扩建，大家希望把合作社发展成为成功的企业。

I was extremely happy to be in this photo with a team of loving and caring role models. They have demonstrated that if one is willing to open one's heart, one can spread the love and care to many other hearts. This loving team all started with this one particular loving role model standing to my left, who helped the rest of the team to get started. Now all of the team members have vowed to further spread their loving hearts to about 50 additional families in the village, and the spreading of love will certainly go on!

They don't just help themselves 助己，more importantly, they are eager to help others 助人. They don't just work hard to make their own lives better 安身，very importantly, they strive to make other people's lives brighter and better because of them 立命. We certainly can learn a lot from them, they are truly our role models!
