University is a great place for young people to acquire knowledge. However, to be able to live a meaningful life and to help address critical social problems, students will need more than just knowledge—they need to gain insights into the issues in real life. And this cannot be taught in classrooms. These insights can only be acquired through real life experiences. With that in mind, in the past years we have offered ourselves—the 12 Bases and the Poverty Alleviation Model which we have developed over the past 7 years across poverty-stricken rural China—serving as platforms for students from北大，清華, and recently 復旦 universities to acquire real life experiences. Through these long term programs, we hope to sow some seeds in the brilliant minds of our society’s future leaders. One day they may be able to understand the root cause of the problem of unfair distribution of opportunities, and therefore, devise sustainable solutions to address these critical social problems. Of course, we truly hope that, some of these future leaders, upon university graduation, will have the hearts and willingness to dedicate their youth and work in poor rural China in order to contribute to the country's future poverty alleviation efforts.

To encourage university graduates to contribute to a prosperous rural China, the government launched a "University Graduates-Turned-Village Cadres" program 大學生村官計劃 in 2005. During the course of our work in past years, we have encountered some of these graduates-cadres at the bases. Despite a strong sense of mission and passion at the beginning of the program, in the absence of proper preparation these young cadres are prone to facing challenges and sometimes frustrations.

为了鼓励大学生们毕业后投身新农村建设，政府在2005年推出了“大学生村官计划”。在过去数年的工作中，我们也曾经在基地里接触到一些大学生村官。尽管这些大学生村官在刚开始加入时有着很强的使命感和热情度，但是因为缺乏适当的准备，这些年轻的干部们很容易就会面临挑战，有时甚至是遭遇挫折。

Last December when I visited 清華大學 and had the opportunity to share my observations about the implementation difficulties of the 大學生村官計劃 with 清華陳吉宁校長, I offered that the Foundation provides a practicum for the new cadres 大學生村官預备计划 to ease their transition to the role of an effective village cadre. We got the full support from the President. Meanwhile, we have also been discussing with 北大 to launch a similar program.

去年12月造访清华大学时，我有机会和清华的陈吉宁校长分享了“大学生村官计划”在实施过程中所遇到的困难。我提出一个“大学生村官预备计划”，就是说基金会为即将赴任的大学生村官们提供实习的机会，让他们可以更容易地融入到村干部的角色中去。我们的计划得到了清华校长的全力支持。同时我们也在和北大商讨推出类似的计划。

Specifically, the practicum 大學生村官預備計劃 will place passionate graduates in our bases for a period of time before they eventually report for duty at government-assigned localities as a formal village cadre. The concept is similar to medical training in which the newly graduated medical students need to go through a rigorous residency period before becoming a fully qualified doctor. This carefully thought-out practicum will put emphases on what needs to be done to help poor villagers, how to accomplish it, and most importantly why—the ultimate purpose that we wish to accomplish. We believe that these knowledge and experiences are exactly what an effective village cadre should be equipped with, in order to make real impacts to address social problems.

具体来说，“大学生村官预备计划”就是在大学生们被政府正式委任为村干部前，在基金会的基地里参加一段时期的实习。这个概念就和医学专业的学生们在正式成为医生前要在医院里进行实习一样。这个经过慎重考虑而推出的实习计划，强调在帮助农民们脱贫致富时，都需要做哪些工作，怎样去做这些工作，以及最重要的是为什么要去做这些工作——这就是我们想要达到的最终目的。我们相信，如果这些大学生村官要真真正正地做出点事情，为解决社会问题出一份力，那么这些知识和经验正是他们所需要具备的。

We think that the Foundation is in a unique position to help make the 大學生村官計劃 better implemented, so that the brilliant young minds’ potential will be fully extended when they make contributions to addressing the critical social problem of uneven distribution of opportunities, which is believed to be the root cause of disharmony of the society.
