Working in poor rural China in the past years, we have learned that there are certain natural constraints in those 国家级贫困县 which are the real root causes of the working poor 在职贫穷and cross-generational poverty 跨代贫穷. The poor mountainous regions usually are very remote and inaccessible without good transportation, and bear too many people while not enough land for cultivation. Under this circumstance, it would be very difficult to develop an agriculture that is economically competitive enough to support the basic needs of the people. As a result, the only viable solution so far has been for the younger population to migrate to the cities, oftentimes ending up in those rather labor-intensive jobs to help their families remaining in the villages. As you know, this has also created other serious social problems, such as 留守儿童 and 空巢老人.
However, thanks to the remoteness, and the way small fields scatter around in the mountain areas, they have remained unpolluted. This would give us a chance to develop the fine 精耕 organic farming 生态农业, and to yield produce of higher market value, thus flipping the disadvantage into competitive advantage. As I told the villagers during our small communication meeting, being poor farmers in adversities, they could look inside to find the most important competitive advantage - integrity 诚信 that the villagers have in themselves. Villagers' integrity, and a reliable and trustworthy quality assurance program supported and adhered to by all the villagers are absolutely essential to a successful 生态农业:
With that in mind, working together with the villagers, we stand a great chance to make integrity the competitive advantage for villagers in the remote poor regions of China.

不过，正是因为地理位置偏远，而这些小块耕地都是零散地分散在山区，所以这里的山区一直都没有受到污染。这给我们一个机会发展精耕细作的生态农业，开发出具有较高经济价值的农作物，从而把劣势转化为优势。和村民们开会时，我告诉他们，在不利环境的制约下，作为一个贫穷的农民，他们要看到他们自身所具备的最重要的竞争优势，就是他们从未丢失的“诚信”。要发展生态农业，“诚信”，以及一份所有村民都支持并参与的可行、可信的品质保证计划，是项目成功必不可缺的元素。
我们期待着与村民们同心协力，将“诚信”变为偏远、贫穷农村地区的竞争优势。
