10年多前汶川大地震的悲剧在很多人的记忆中，很可能永远难以抹去。2008年6月汶川地震后的一个月，我到访重灾区之一的绵竹。它地处成都平原和青藏高原两大地质板块的交界处，因此由这次地震带来的破坏也特别严重。

The tragedy of the Wenchuan earthquake around a decade ago was unlikely to be deleted in many peoples’ mind. In June 2008, one month after theearthquake, I visited one of the seriouslydamaged areas, Mianzhu. It is located at the junction of the two major tectonicplates of the Chengdu Plain and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which is also the reason forthe severe damage caused by the earthquake.

从这张我在山里红岩村拍下的照片可以看到整个村几乎完全被山泥淹埋。另一张在平地上九龙镇小学操场的照片，就在这里很多小学的老师和同学都丧失了他们宝贵的生命。

还记得在我们第一次和村民们的座谈上，我的承诺是我们将会用一代人的工夫，至少15年的时间来帮助他们由这个不幸的大灾难中重新站立起来。当然灾后工作的重中之重，肯定是农房重建。因此基金会灾后在绵竹帮助重建了大概2000栋农房, 只用了一年半时间。10年之后的今天，大概当初所有的援建单位都已经撤离绵竹。为了兑现当初对村民的承诺，我们基金会继续留下来做我们还没有做完的工作，不再是农房重建，而是帮助改变人的思维，规范功德的重新树立。

I still remember that atthe first meeting with the villagers,my promise was that we would spend at least 15 years to help them to renewhope and resume their life from this unfortunate catastrophe. Of course, the most important post-disasterwork was definitely the reconstruction ofhouses. So, KGKF helped to rebuild about 2000 housesin Mianzhu, which took us one and a half years. Today, 10 years later, all theother aid units have probably left Mianzhu. Inorder to fulfill our commitment to thevillagers at the time,we stay behind to continuewith our work that we have not yet done.It is no longer rebuilding houses, but to help change the mentalityof people and todevelop the qualities of rule-abiding and caring for one another.

2019年春节前，灾后整整十年后我有机会再一次重访绵竹，市区的繁荣景象让我再也看不到地震留下来的痕迹。由大山里移民搬迁下来的村民，早已经住进了他们的新房子，建立了新社区。在清洁整齐井井有条的新社区里，我们看到了规范公德的意识已经慢慢地在村民每天的生活中落地生根。

Before the Spring Festival in 2019, a decade after the disaster, I had the opportunity to visit Mianzhu again. The prosperity of the urban area made me no longer see the signs of the damage from the earthquake. The villagers who were migrated from the mountains have already moved in their new houses and new communities were built. In these clean and well-organized new communities, we could see that the rule-abiding awareness has been gradually rooted in the daily life of the villagers.

物质的改变来得比较容易，但是精神，素质的改变总是费时需日的。每天清晨不论寒暑，人们都能看到这位自己行动不便的叶村医，自动自发的拿着扫把在垃圾收集站的周边，把人们丢弃在垃圾站外面的垃圾清扫干净。看起来是件小事，但她的坚持正在为村里做出一个重要的改变，像这样体现在每天过日子中的改变能够为村里带来规范公德的内化和可持续文化的建立。因为大改变都是由小改变开始，而大人物都是由小人物转换而生的。

It is easier to make material changes, while changes in spirit and quality always take time. Every morning, regardless of the weather, we can always see doctor Ye, a mobility-impaired village doctor, takes the initiative to clean up the rubbish which was dumped outside the rubbish collection station by others. It seems to be a trivial matter, but her perseverance is making an important change in the village, which such daily life change helps the internalization of a sustainable rule-abiding and caring culture in the village. Because big changes start with small steps, and great men used to be ordinary persons.

With the joint efforts of our teams and the local people from KGKF’s 14 poverty eradication bases around the nation, we have been investing for sustainable impacts for more than 10 years. Although we have fallen down many times on this long and arduous journey, we still persevered in standing up and moving on. We deeply believe that the hearts and time we have put in over the past 10 years, have already made subtle but far-reaching and sustainable impacts in the society, which bring us confidence and strengthen to strive forward in our journey.
