The Story of 2 Countries

Came back to USA for another VISA Board meeting.

As I normally do, on my way I stop over in Canada.

This is the Vancouver Harbor at dawn. Not too far from here south on the other side of the border, the Seattle harbor is also at dawn. As a matter of fact, these 2 countries are so close together and so much in common. They are all countries of immigrants. However, after a few hundred years of working and living side by side, they do still maintain some of their uniqueness.

Just like USA, Canada has huge land but with only about less than 1/10 of the US population. Most of them live along the US border. For years Canadian has been considered as American's little brother. I guess that they have been more humble, quieter and try harder. As a result, they have done quite well. Life expectancy in Canada is 81 years, versus 78 in US. Looks like Canadians live longer and healthier than their southern neighbors.

This can be a financial district of a big city of either USA or Canada.

If you still remember during our Baojin meeting I asked you to start to develop some interest on what is going on in the world, so you can begin to build up your global view. Obviously the biggest problem in the world today is the global financial crisis. So let's just look at it quickly how the two countries suffered differently under this current crisis.

In 2008, the World Economic Forum ranked Canada's banking system the healthiest in the world, US ranked 40th. How did it happen? Common sense. In the past decade, as US and Europe loosened regulations on financial industry, the Canadians refused to follow. Banks in Canada are typically leveraged at 18 to 1, compared with US banks at 26 to 1. As a result, in the industrialized world, Canada is the only country has not faced a single bank failure. With the great financial discipline, Canada has had 12 years of budget surpluses, and can now spend money to fuel a recovery from a strong position

The financial district of San Francisco.
More people are going to lose their jobs in this and many other industries in the USA. The unemployment rate is expected to climb to 10 percent quickly

Looks like this time the Americans can really learn something from their humble and quiet little brothers across the border from the north.
